Riparian Owners – the official name for people who own property on the edge of a river.

These owners are presumed to own the river bed up to the centre line of the river. The law gives them various rights but it also places on them certain responsibilities.

You can get some idea of the rights and responsibilities from the leaflet below but for a full legal explanation you must get in touch with the Environment Agency.

The leaflet gives contact addresses and telephone numbers. For more information go to the GOV.UK web site.
